Foster-to-Adopt

What is Foster-to-Adopt?

Foster-to-Adopt is a great way to bring a dog home while they complete important medical care. In this program, you take your dog home right away, but Pets Lifeline remains the legal guardian until all medical needs—such as treatments or spay/neuter surgery—are complete.

Foster-to-Adopt is typically used for puppies or dogs receiving ongoing medical care. During this time, you’ll provide a loving home while bringing your dog to scheduled appointments with our team. Once their care is complete, the adoption is finalized.

Foster-to-Adopt families must live in Sonoma County, be available for appointments, and follow all care guidelines—especially for young puppies who are not yet fully vaccinated.

Foster-to-Adopt FAQs

What does Foster-to-Adopt mean?
Foster-to-Adopt means you take a dog home with the intention of adopting, but Pets Lifeline remains the legal owner until all medical care is complete.

Why would a dog be Foster-to-Adopt?
This usually applies to puppies who are too young to be spayed/neutered or dogs who need ongoing medical treatment.

Am I the dog’s owner right away?
Not yet. During the foster period, Pets Lifeline manages medical care and decisions. Once all requirements are complete, the adoption is finalized.

What are my responsibilities?
You’ll provide daily care and a safe home, and bring your dog to Pets Lifeline for scheduled appointments like medical checks, vaccines, or surgery. As the authorized Foster-to-Adopt caretaker on contract, only you can house the pup during this foster period.

Are there special rules for puppies?
Yes. Puppies who aren’t fully vaccinated must avoid public spaces, parks, and contact with unfamiliar animals for their safety.

Who can apply?
Foster-to-Adopt homes must live in Sonoma County, be available for appointments, and meet standard adoption requirements (including meet-and-greets for resident dogs).
