Lessons from Sarah

Too often people are disappointed when the animal they’ve adopted doesn’t meet their expectations. I would like to share an experience with a special cat.

Sarah was adopted and returned twice from Pets Lifeline. When I took her home she would not stay inside and didn’t pay much attention to me. Though cats are safer inside, I left Sarah alone but continued to feed her and watch out for her. She soon became a neighborhood celebrity and favorite. From her perch on my fence she accepted treats, petting, and love from friends and strangers alike. She was a great ambassador for Pets Lifeline, allowing me to answer questions about animals and the role of Pets Lifeline in the Valley.

Sarah died on Friday. She is sorely missed by me and her “fans.”

I think the message here is this: be patient with a new animal and don’t expect perfection right at first – or ever. Treat animals the way you would want to be treated and learn from them. You will probably not be disappointed.
