Thanks for keeping a community that cares

Going strong for 25 years…and getting even stronger!

Before 1982 there were no local animal shelters or resources available to help the Sonoma Community cope with the problem of stray and abandoned animals. This lack of animal services motivated a handful of dedicated animal lovers to join together to create a local animal welfare organization. Thanks to the support and dedication of this unique community, the shelter property on Eighth Street East was purchased, and Pets Lifeline was established.

During its first years of growth, animals were housed in makeshift quarters or placed in temporary foster care. Our main effort was to find new homes for stray dogs and cats (those not lucky enough to be reunited with their owners). Adoptions were scheduled "by appointment only" because of limited resources.

The Shelter as we know it today was built and opened in 1987 to accommodate 12 dogs and 20 to 30 cats. With the help of foster care volunteers we are able to help many more animals than our licensed capacity allows. Visitors are encouraged to come to the Shelter to see our dogs and to socialize with the cats and kittens in our two community cats rooms.

We provide food, shelter, medical attention, and loving care to homeless dogs and cats.

We spay/neuter all shelter animals BEFORE finding them permanent homes.

We maintain data on lost and found animals and help reunite pets with their owners.

We provide free, personalized ID tags for dogs and cats.

We offer microchipping identification services to adopters and to the community. See PLL Services.

We provide free pet food to low income families.

We provide information and assistance to pet owners.

We coordinate a free program to match older people with mature animals.

We coordinate a program to trap, spay/neuter and maintain feral cats.

We help area residents to find and adopt non-shelter animals.

We coordinate our activities with other shelters and pet rescue services to maximize pet adoptions.

We conduct ongoing community education services to raise the level of public awareness about responsible pet ownership.

Pets Lifeline is not affiliated with any other animal welfare organization and does not receive any government funding. Our revenue comes from adoption and redemption fees, Associate Membership dues, donations, bequests, fundraising events and Thrift and Pet Store sales.

Pets Lifeline offers annual Associate Memberships. The Associate Membership card entitles one to valuable discounts through community merchants. The Membership year is from June 1st through May 31st. Learn more about Associate Memberships and become a member today.

Over 150 volunteers support the activities of Pets Lifeline in everything from walking dogs, to bulk mailing and fundraising. For more information on volunteering at Pets Lifeline visit our volunteer page.

Pets Lifeline is dedicating to continuing its work on behalf of stray and abandoned animals in the Sonoma Valley. We are also working hard to raise public awareness about responsible pet ownership. We will continue reach out into the community and speak to the need for spay/neutering, for keeping one's pets at home and for making a lifelong commitment to one's animal companion. And we shall continue to work cooperatively with other animal welfare organizations throughout Sonoma County to fulfill our mission.
