Humane Trapping Instructions

Please plan what you are going to do with the cat you are trapping before you trap. Your plan should be one of the following:

  1. Do not trap the cat, but call Pets Lifeline first at 996-4577 and ask for our "Feral Cat Report". We may be able to help.
  2. Trap and take the cat to your veterinarian for neutering, vaccinations and necessary health care. Then return it to your property to be cared for, fed and watered regularly. Be sure to make appointment and arrangements with your vet before you trap.
  3. Please take the cat to the animal shelter. First call the shelter to find out their hours before you trap. It is inhumane to keep a cat in a trap for much longer than an hour. Please be aware that animals brought to a shelter will most likely be destroyed.

Please note: It is illegal to trap an animal and relocate it or abandon it. Legally, you may only take it to the local animal shelter (or your vet).

Items needed:
     Clean trap
     Can of tuna (bait)
     Newspaper
     Clean towel or drape sheet
     Flashlight (if trapping after dark)

Procedure:

  1. Fold 2 sheets of newspaper lengthwise and place in trap.
  2. Place mound of tuna at sliding-door end of trap right up next to door.
  3. Place trap. Make sure door is latched.
  4. Set trap door. Place trail of small tuna pieces from outside of door to middle of trap.
  5. Watch trap. As soon as the cat is trapped, drape trap with towel so that the cat can't see anything and calms down.
  6. Carefully transport cat to vet or shelter.

***Important Rules that Must be Followed***

NEVER leave a set trap unattended, not even for 5 minutes.
NEVER set a trap at night and check it in the morning.
Always start with clean equipment. All equipment should be rinsed out after each use with a mild bleach solution.
Always use clean towels or cut-up sheets for drapes.
Remember to handle cats in equipment carefully. The cat will be frightened, so care should be taken that the animal remains as calm and comfortable as possible.
