 HAVE YOU LOST YOUR PET?

We receive daily reports of missing cats and dogs as well as reports of cats and dogs found by responsible citizens. Please check our listings by calling 996-4577 during business hours. (Tuesday through Saturday 9-5. Closed on Sunday and Monday.)
  FIRST IMPORTANT STEPS TO RECOVERY:

1. Call/visit ALL shelters in your area. Sometimes pets wander or are taken outside of your city/county line. You should contact all of the following agencies.

2. Create a flier with a recent color picture of your pet. Include information on the pet's breed, age, sex, if spayed/neutered, area lost, date lost and who to contact. If you have moved recently, post the fliers in your old neighborhood, your new neighborhood, and areas in between. Pets sometimes travel long distances to return to an old home.

3. Call local veterinarians in case your animal was injured and brought in for treatment. Ask veterinarians to post your flier in their reception area.

4. Place a lost pet ad in your local newspaper with the same information that is on your lost pet poster. If your pet is a mixed breed, give a description of the pet's size, build, hair length, etc. Also check listings of found pets in the paper. In the Sonoma Valley, check the Sonoma Index-Tribune.

5. Talk to neighbors and ask them to watch for your pet. Give them a copy of your flier. If you have lost a cat, ask neighbors to check garages, sheds, crawl spaces and other areas your cat may have been trapped.

6. Continue looking. Don't assume your pet has been stolen. Someone who finds your pet may hold onto it before bringing it to a shelter. Pets have been returned months, and even years, after disappearing.


RECOMMENDED STEPS ONCE YOU HAVE FOUND YOUR PET:

1. Have it neutered/spayed immediately. Cats and dogs are now routinely spayed/neutered at 2 months of age. Intact animals are more likely to wander.

2. Keep your pet confined. Sonoma County has a strict leash law. There are also fences and enclosures available that will keep your cat confined to your yard. Call us for more advice about keeping your pet confined and about keeping an indoor cat happy.

3. Keep current identification on your pet. Dogs over 4 months of age must be licensed with your local animal control agency. Also consider having your pet microchipped. This quick, inexpensive procedure provides your pet with permanent identification that can be read by any shelter. Contact your veterinarian or Pets Lifeline for information about microchipping.

4. Take special care of your pet around July 4th, New Years, Halloween, and during thunderstorms.
